Festival Games

The two Australian cyclists D. Perkins and G. Johnson provided most of the big thrills in the Nelson Festival Games held at Trafalgar Park. At times they appeared to be out of the race, but each time came back with a fantastic sprint to win the major placings. T. Tabak, another young rider, from Christchurch, was the only cyclist to offer them serious competition. Other feature athletes competing were Olympic representative and 20,000 metre world record holder Bill Baillie and national women's 80 metres hurdles champion, Avis Mcintosh. Both won their events easily.

Some doubt existed as to whether Tabak (left) or Perkins crossed the line first in the three-mile cycle event, but judges awarded the race rightly (as shown) to Perkins.
