Obituaries

During the past month the deaths occurred of three notable Nelson personalities, Rev. Father C. Outtrim (above), Chief Inspector J. J. Kearns (right) and Mr H. G. Williams.

Father Outtrim, seen here with Father J. Kingan, was assistant at St. Mary's, Manuka Street, for the past five years. He had filled many posts in New Zealand before coming to Nelson and was loved and respected by people in all walks of life.

Nine days before he was due to retire, Mr Kearns died in ChristChurch during a holiday visit. He had been a member of the Police Force for nearly 40 years, for the last four of which he was in charge of the Nelson-Marlborough district. He also served in many other parts of New Zealand.

Well-known for his associations with the army and with the Nelson Returned Services' Association, Mr Williams was given a military funeral upon his death. He was house manager of the Nelson Public Hospital from 1947 until his death and held many executive positions on several sports bodies.
