From the 2XN stable came the winning team of Maurie Boyce, Diane Roberts, Kerry Stevens, Stuart Stubbs and Alwyn Palmer.

The Whareama Shield (held aloft by race commentator Alan Paterson above), and publicity for the Whareama Home appeal for finance to provide a further nine hospital beds in the new hospital wing to be erected at the home, were at stake when the Bedstead race to publicise the appeal was run by the Lions Club one Friday night earlier this month. Seven teams of six faced the starter and then careered down Trafalgar Street to Hardy Street before racing back to the Bridge Street starting point. The 2XN entry romped home an easy winner and the Lions filled second place. There were many weary minor place getters.
