Maadi Gup Surprise

It is usual in the Maadi Cup tournament for the host association to provide a B team and so prevent byes. Until this year it was unknown for any B team to win the tournament, but this year Nelson B caused a major upset by first beating the Nelson A side and then winning the trophy. As well as beating the Nelson A side, the B team also beat the holder, Marlborough and then fought well against exhaustion to beat West Coast 1-nil to clinch the trophy. The team was led by former Nelson captain John Wesney and without doubt his leadership and play contributed most toward his team's victory.
