Old Masters Of The Automobile World

Nearly 100 vehicles ranging in age from 33 to 63 years, and all looking as if they had just been delivered from the factories, drew about 10,000 spectators to Marchwood Park, Motueka, for the annual South Island rally of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand over Easter. For the automobile enthusiast, the sight of all these different makes and models of old vehicles was enough to gladden the heart. The cars, trucks and motor-cycles at the rally were estimated to be worth more than £50,000, and if the man-hours lovingly spent in restoring many of them to their original order were taken into consideration, the value would be astronomical. Looking at many of them it was difficult to appreciate that in many instances they were, when found by these enthusiasts, just heaps of scrap lying under hedges or in a forgotten corner of a farm.

The four veteran cars (up to and including 1918) judged the Tour best restored vehicles in this class: C. Patchett's 1916 Overland (Blenheim), J. Newell's 1911 Wolseley-Siddeley (Rangiora), N. Find-lay's 1913 Morris (Napier), G. B. Jelf's 1915 Ford (Rangiora).
