Traffic Troublespots

Every city and sizeable town have their troublespots for traffic and Nelson is no exception. Many of the dangerous intersections have been made safe by "Stop" or "Give Way" signs, but there are several others which still give concern. We list four, in our opinion, the worst four, on these pages.

The Tukuka Street-Waimea Road intersection, despite "Stop" signs, can be very dangerous in the circumstances we depict here. Cars and vans parked outside the shops on the right obscure vision for motorists crossing the intersection or turning into Waimea Road. On the west side of Tukuka Street, a reasonably steep gradient leads up to the "stop" line and the combination of all these factors makes this a very tricky corner. It is not until the nose of the car is well past the "stop" line that drivers are afforded the view above, and the clear roadway they can see is very limited.

Not really dangerous is the Cock and Co five-way crossing, but this is often the scene of large-scale snarl-ups at peak hours. Lights controlling this crossing would be a great advantage.

We believe the Manuka-Tasman-Brook Streets intersection the most dangerous in Nelson. It is crossed daily by school-children on foot and on bicycle and their view is restricted. It is even more dangerous for motorists travelling in Manuka Street. Restricted speed signs on Tasman and Brook Streets would do much to eliminate this danger.

The restricted view afforded motorists on Manuka Street. In the pic at right the bonnet of the car was about 10ft from the centre line of the road when the picture was taken.

Cars parked outside the Sports Hall obscure the vision to the right of motorists using the Grove Street extension to the back of Trafalgar Park, and a garage on the left also restricts vision. This road is now being used extensively. This pic also was taken when the bonnet of the car was 8ft past the kerb line when the car approaching at right was seen.
