A Boon For Kiddies

Children living in the housing area around Neale Avenue North never relished the thought of walking to the Nayland Road School. They had to take a long, roundabout route to get there. Now, through the efforts of their school committee and the city council, they are able to use a short cut not previously available to them because of the Poorman's Valley Stream. Answer to the problem was a 50ft arched bridge constructed in Nelson and transported to and erected on old abutments which once carried the railway over the stream.

With the exception of a hold-up at Magazine Point, where the transporter found some difficulty in navigating the sharp bend, the loading and transportation of the bridge created few problems.
