A unique innovation in New Zealand building is contained in the flooring being laid in the chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Nayland Road. Small rubber pads are attached at regular intervals on the floor joists and these rest on the concrete floor. The rubber provides a slight spring to the floor. Al Fluhman, the Supervisor, shows above one of the joists. The laying of the flooring itself is demonstrated here by Bill Mason and Noble Remeka, The T and G (only 2 in wide) is hammered into place by Bill and Noble, following him, nails it down with a special type of machine something like a stapler. The nail-staples it contains secure the floor to the joist through the tongue, so that no nail-holes can be seen in a completed piece of flooring. The machine is believed to be the only one of its kind in New Zealand.
