Local Body Elections

None of the old council who sought seats on the new one was displaced. Six of the council seats were filled by new members. Topping the poll for the council seats, Mr S. A. Whitehead was later elected deputy-mayor of Nelson.

The referendum on fluoridation showed quite conclusively that this vexed question will not be a controversial subject at future council meetings, the majority against fluoridation being 1251 votes. The experiment of conducting the polls over six days proved very successful, a greater percentage of electors voting than at the previous election.

At this juncture "Photo News" would like to congratulate all successful candidates, especially those new members who won seats on the city council. Events in Nelson, but in particular, Tahuna, during these last few months make it very apparent that the new council is going to pass through a very testing period of office. We wish them every success.
