Those Gala Days

The picture above tells the story, or most of it, of the Nelson Intermediate School gala. It rained - in fact it poured, letting up only long enough to allow the school band to play a couple of items before the musicians had to duck for cover. Inside, however, all was push and squash - you pushed to get into a room, and were then squashed. But quite a tidy sum of money changed hands inside the building, where produce, sweets and toffee apples ad nauseum found a ready sale.

Even the dolls, in all their finery, made a few bob
