New Wakatu Sub-Division
Battle of Blue Gum Ends
The Nelson Hospital Board and city council agreed to lay down arms after several months of battling over this blue-gum at the corner of Kawai and Franklyn Street, Council considered it a menace to traffic, wires etc. and wanted it cut down, but the hospital board opposed it. A compromise was reached, "Give Way" signs being erected on Kawai Street.
To keep pace with Nelson's expansion, more and more land in the Nelson, Stoke and Richmond areas is being subdivided fop building sections. Latest and probably biggest sub-division of recent months is that at Wakatu. Roading, sewerage and kerbing work, although hampered by rain, is progressing steadily. Above is a view of the new sub-division from Waimea Road and below the monstrous ditch-digger used for laying sewerage pipe.
