No doubt, many motorists have been frustrated when, in a bid to reach Nile Street east, by following Nile Street from the city, they have been forced to detour to Bridge Street. The proposed Nile Street bridge will be welcomed by many, but not by all. At a recent town planning hearing, the Nelson City Council heard objections to the proposed bridge based on increased noise from through traffic; reduced privacy; increased traffic hazards for residents and school children; the detrimental effect the work proposed would have on some properties, and the lack of a comprehensive traffic circulation plan of the city to substantiate the need for the bridge. But, there was support for the scheme based on the premise that town planning was intended to serve the community as a whole, and having another bridge across the Maitai River will certainly provide easier access to eastern areas.
