Southland Top Of Under–16 Rugby
Southland successfully defended its South Island under-16 rugby crown when it beat Marlborough, 24-0, in the final at Trafalgar Park. Southland did not look like losing a game in the tournament and provided the bulk of the players in the South Island team.
Southland flanker and South Island No.8 David Ward had a host of witnesses as he dived across the line to score against Marlborough. Arriving too late to prevent the try is Marlborough's Gary McDonald. Others are Noel Robertson, Mr Roy Macey (Nelson Bays), Lucky McDonald, John Fraser (Southland), Paul Van Velthoven, Ron Vanstone and Marlborough's twin brothers, Michael and Milton McDonald
So near and yet so far. Peter Allan, Southland's second five-eighth, makes a foiled bid for the line. The Marlborough defender is Steven Healey, who was selected as the South Island fullback
And going in for one of his three tries is Southland winger Barry Belesky
