Polar Bears And Brass Monkeys

Mid-winter swimming must appeal to many. In just three hours, the Nelson Yacht Club raised nearly $1900 from a sponsored mid-winter swim by about 125 people. From 6 a.m. until 9 a.m., hardy souls arrived in twos and threes to take a brief plunge. There was one consolation: The water, at 8 deg. C, was about 10 degrees warmer than the air. So, if the swimmers turned blue when they hit the water, they went purple on emerging. The effort was to raise funds for fitting out a new rescue craft.
