Junior Golf Title To Marilyn Smith

As the National Junior Women's golf championship progressed, so did the play of Wellington's Marilyn Smith im-prove. Her qualifying round, played in shocking weather conditions, resulted in a gross 84, But from that point on Miss Smith's golf improved and she progressed through the field to win a place in the final against Sally Beadle Palmerston North. And she won that final two-up, to claim her third junior title. Miss Smith's other wins were in 1968 and 70. Hopes for a "home" win by former Nelson provincial champion Dianne Low were dashed in the quarter finals where Miss Smith proved too strong for Miss Low. Miss Low, now playing for Otago, was beaten four and three. Thirty-seven of New Zealand's top young golfers contested the championship.

Two national selectors kept a close eye on the golfers. They were Mrs A. J. Lahmert and Miss E. M. B. Nutt, who are shown here with Mrs J. Mitchell, captain of the Nelson Ladies Golf Club, and Mrs G. T. Crossman, the N.Z.L.G.U. member for Nelson-West Coast-Marlborough.

A player to watch for in the future is Sue Armstrong, Otago, who is a national tennis representative. Although only involved in golf for about three years she has already won a place in the Otago team. Sue was beaten in a semi-final by Sally Beadle.

Much interest centred around the performance of the Gisborne player, Frances Pere, who was beaten by Pip Dudding in the first round of match play. Frances compensated with a win in the championship plate.
