A Visit To Wakatu Lodge

Wakatu Lodge, a home for the aged and a rehabilitation centre, was opened earlier this year. Administered by the Nelson Hospital Board, the lodge has 22 residents at present but can accommodate 31. In charge of the lodge is a matron, Mrs P. Enright, who has about 20 staff under her. And Sister Enright and her merry band of helpers run a happy home.

Ninety-year-old Miss Florence Knight, shown here with Sister Enright, has had a colourful career which included a nine-year-stint in Japan, where Miss Knight worked with an English family and also the Shell Oil Co. Miss Knight survived the great earthquake in the early 1900s which reduced Yokohama to rubble.

Relaxing in the sun are Mesdames I. M. Armstrong (84), F. K. Sugden (89), M. Cobeldick (85), and Messrs E. Norton (73) and Happy Lyford (71). With them is Sister Mrs A. Royle

And sitting wrapped in blankets beside a heater is a good way to keep warm: Mrs B. McGirr (75) and Mrs E. McNeil(86).

Mrs Sugden's main hobby is her indoor plants, which she carefully tends. Admiring the pampered plants is Sister Royle. Mrs Sugden was a nurse in the First World War and served in Egypt, England and on hospital ships

Mrs Eva Sanders (89) appears to be in capable hands here. Nurse Carol Delany and medical orderly Tony Wright spare a moment for the camera. Mrs Sanders and her late husband, a lighthouse keeper, were stationed on lonely lighthouses from Cape Reinga to Dog Island.

Mrs G. Bell (84) has an association with Wakatu Lodge which spans many years. Her sister. Bertha Jennings, was a maid in the house when it belonged to the Harley family. With Mrs Bell is Sister Enright.
