Our Cover

Issue No. 135 5 February

This is a first for "Photo News's" cover. It is a montage depicting summer activities, and they scarcely need explaining. Shown are speedboat racing at Lake Rotoiti during the national championships; car racing on the sand at Tahuna Back Beach with New Zealand champ, Peter Leversedge, featured; motorcycle racing on the Back Beach, and a colourful shot of the Maitai River raft race.

Back Cover. This month is Vintage Car Rally time for Nelson and in 11 days hundreds of the old timers will be converging on Nelson. As this rally is in summer, we have given the 1906 Cadillac a summary look with the addition of two attractive girls, Sandra and Robin Byers. Sandra's clutching the knee board and Robin's all set to drive to Tahuna Beach. This Model K Tulip veteran is owned by the girls' father, Bernie Byers and, in 1970, was second overall veteran in the international rally in Australia. The Cadillac is powered by a single cylinder (in a copper jacket) 10hp engine mounted under the driver's seat. The fly wheel weighs 125 lb. The car will cruise at about 20mph and in the last international rally, Bernie travelled 2000 miles. After the Australian rally the car was lost for five weeks, but she turned up safe and well.
