Members of the Nelson Underwater Club made a clean sweep of the South Island spearfishing championships at Picton. Merilyn Irvine won the women's championship and, with Colin Walker, won the team trophy; Pat Parsons won the South Island championship, the most species' trophy and, with Dan Castle, the team event; Dan Castle partnered Pat to win the team event; Colin Walker was the junior champion, won the team trophy with Merilyn, and bagged the biggest fish.
