This photograph was taken of a group of miners at the mouth of the Otira Tunnel in 1911. They had just come onto shift and were on their way into the tunnel. Arthur Johns, who supplied us with the photograph, is standing about the middle and has a cigarette in his mouth

All set for their shift these miners had their picture taken at the entrance to the new shaft of the Progress Junction Mine on Globe Hill near Reefton in 1910, In this photograph Arthur Johns again shows his fondness for tobacco - he's smoking a pipe and is standing sixth from left in the middle row

Recognise this place? No it's not the main street of a Wild West town. It's Murchison - in 1909. Horses pulling covered wagons plod down the street while their new opposition in the transport line, cars, stand parked outside Downie's Hotel. They made wide streets in those days
