Ngatiwairau Showed Them How
The Ngatiwairau Concert Party, Blenheim, almost scooped the pool at the first Northern Districts Maori Cultural Council competitions in Motueka.
Ngatiwairau, led by Ned Pou, won the trophies for the haka, best leader, poi, uniformity and the aggregate. The host club, Motueka, won the trophy for an action song and Ngawhatu won the prize for hymns. Tapuaenuku of Blenheim won the patere trophy. Waikawa and Motueka tied in the junior section.
The event proved very popular and attracted a large audience to the Motueka High School Assembly Hall.

Prior to the competitions all the visitors were welcomed at the Te Awhena Hall by the Motueka Maori Culture Club. There were several speakers at the function and the club acknowledged each speaker with an action song. Women members were dressed in black and had greenery in their hair and hands, symbolising togetherness in happiness and sorrow

Listening to the speakers at Te Awhena Hall were Ellis Hickmott, patron of the Motueka club, Miss L. M. C. Ingram and Mr. L. J. Krammer, Motueka's Mayor.
Young and old were there to enjoy the welcome and the competitions. Among the guests were Mr and Mrs Tom Riwaka of Waikawa, Picton, and with them is their grandson, Watson Ohia.
