The Nelson open squash tournament was developed into a major event and this year's was the biggest held in Nelson. Brilliant play was produced in the A grade men's finals with Keith Green, Wellington, beating former Davis Cup tennis player Richard Hawkes, Christchurch, in five games.

Ross Neal, Marlborough, and John Wesney, Nelson, contested in the B grade finals with Neal winning 9-3, 9-0, 6-9, 9-2
Pam Senior was the only Nelson player to win a title. She won the A grade finals from Beverley Fineran, Christchurch, 10-9, 9-3, 9-6
