Mahar Cup To Marlborough
The Mahar Cup, symbol of athletics and cycling supremacy in the Seddon Shield districts, changed hands for the first time in eight years this season. Marlborough, who had earlier in the season beaten Nelson in the Hester Shield, claimed the cup from Nelson at Trafalgar Park. But Nelson dominated the senior track events and the Dixon Brothers, John and Rodney, provided some of the highlights in the distance events. Both set records - John in the 5000 metres and Rodney in the 1500 metres. All round Marlborough was too strong and thoroughly deserved the victory.
John Dixon shadowed international, Eddie Gray, Greymouth, for most of the 5000 metres before surging away for an easy win. Here the tenseness and pressure of the battle show on their faces
