National Chess Tournament

×

The concentration in the Nelson College for Girls Assembly Hall was so intense you could almost see it as 54 players vied for national chess honours. Three classes were contested-the championship grade, premier reserve and second premier reserve or C grade. This was the first time the event had been held in Nelson since 1925-26 and the entry was close to the record 60 at Wellington two years ago. Three Nelson men, William Lynn, Denis Boyce and Tom Van Dijk competed in the main event with Tom coming equal third. The championship was won by Richard Sutton, Auckland, shown at Left with the handsome trophy he claimed. All other competitors on this page are from Nelson.
