The lona short-stay home unit at Braemar Hospital has proved so successful that the Health Department is extending the unit by another 12 beds - doubling the original capacity of the unit. The unit, which provides short-stay living for intellectually handicapped children, was pioneered at Braemar Hospital. It is believed that several others are now being built in other parts of New Zealand.

Nothing like self help. Boys and girls of Nelson Intermediate School walked for miles, saved tea coupons and sold sections of the carpet on the floor of the school library for 20c a square foot, to improve amenities at the library. A new carpet has made the library quiet and cosy - the ideal spot for some solid swot or the completion of a project.
