History was made recently when the Anchor Shipping Company's Coaster Mamaku became the first coaster to use the harbour board's big slip. History was also made in the way in which rust was chipped from the hull. In the past it has been a hammer and chisel job. This time it was by water jet under pressure. The jet unit (which can develop 5000 lbs to the square inch) was brought to Nelson by Ascott Engineering. The jet Above was operated here by Theo Van Der Vegt and Mr A. Scott, principal of the firm, tends the compact unit at Right.

A new cool store of nearly 20,000 sq. ft. capacity is to be built for the Nelson Freezing Company on this site alongside the company's present works. Contractors are B. R. Malcolm Ltd.
