The Nelson Photo News

Pot Pourri

Lots of people reach 80, but there's not many like Fred Cullen who is still working, and working hard, at this age. Fred, who has been painting the new shops on Milton Street, celebrated his 80th birthday on the day this pic was taken, and to mark the occasion, Mrs T. Price turned on a surprise party for him. He's been painting for 63 years and intends to retire "when the ladies let him". What's more, he's as spry as a two-year-old. Seen here with work-mates Charlie MacKenzie, Herb Valk, Jack Wallace, Mrs Price, Trevor Price and Dick Ricketts.

After the party, he was back on the job.
