New Police Station Opened

Nelson's new police station, another of tbe city's fine buildings, was opened early last month by the Minister of Police (Mr D. J. Eyre), The building, costing in the vicinity of $75,000, contains up-to-date equipment for the force and the roominess of its three storeys contrasts rather sharply with the crowded single storey building which has housed the force since the old station was demolished. Next year the station, and its cars, will be equipped with two-way radio.

Present with Mr Eyre from Wellington was the Commissioner of Police, Mr W. S. Brown, who retired recently after 40 years in the force.

After the official opening, invited guests were shown over the new building. Greatest interest was shown in the cell block which contains all the amenities for caring for prisoners. Added to the block is an exercise yard with a roof of bars, A roomy yard at the rear of the building will permit the discreet entrance of prisoners who will walk straight into the charge room and will be out of sight of the public using the public entrance. The station is also provided with a fully-equipped dark room for the police photographer and separate waiting rooms for men and women. A big social room occupies the majority of the top storey.
