The Dutch navigator, Abel Tasman, sailed into Ligar Bay on December 18, 1642, and had a brush with the Maoris during which four of his men were kilted, then sailed onwards. His visit to the area was commemorated in 1942 by the erection of a memorial on a hilltop overlooking the bay. Slightly to the left of the memorial is Tata Beach.
