Road Up, And Down

Lots of roading activity in the heart of Nelson lately. Close to the Trafalgar Street Bridge and in Halifax Street, Council employees have been laying a new sewer main which will connect with the Vanguard Street pumping station and with the Atawhai outfall sewerage scheme. During these operations the men found some old pipes laid many years previously, To ensure that trees adjacent to the trenching were not damaged, the trees were given mechanical support (above). In Bridge Street it was another matter. Here a paving machine has laid three layers of hot-mix paving (below left). This type of paving more than doubles the life of the road, as well as minimising road noise. The operation of the machine was fascinating. A truck with hot-mix travelled slowly in front of the machine discharging its contents into a hopper (below). The machine did the rest.
