The Whitebaiters

Word of good runs of whitebait on the West Coast sent local bait fishermen scurrying for vantage points on the Wairoa River at the Rabbit Island bridge area. Many managed to get a reasonable sort of feed, but in some cases takes were restricted to less than a cupful of the delicacy. The pic above shows a section of the riverbank adjacent to the bridge and the hopeful fishermen. The pix below show baiters on the southern bank.
