Women's Institute Festival

Influenza took its toll and prevented some institutes from entering the one-day festival staged by Nelson district Women's Institute branches at Motueka last month. But despite the last-minute scratchings, the festival was as successful as in past years.

An uproarious mime on a "Mrs New Zealand" contest was performed by the Ngatimoti branch, ending with "Mrs N.Z." (Patricia Whelan), centre, getting the title (left). Runner-up was Agnes Cole (left), with Vera Williams (right).

Lower Moutere branch featured a golden wedding celebration as its theme. Mum and dad were Gertie Clark and Alphina Knapp.

Wakefield institute went Dutch.

Winning entry in the entertainment class was Motueka, which presented its own version of Little Red Riding Hood. In our estimation, a tremendous effort by all concerned. Here, Little Red etc enters the gypsy camp, and at left, she is entertained by the bears who were having a teddy bears' picnic. At bottom left, Little Red (Mrs R. Watson) meets Wolf (Flora Foulter).

A scene from golden wedding anniversary (Lower Moutere). The "ghost" helped get Betty Goodman into Beryl Cameron's arms.

Urewhenua went way out west during its half-hour entertainment.

Mrs Jean McNabb, home science teacher at Hotueka High School, samples the winning apple pie, while steward, Mrs Isme Hodder, awaits the verdict. The winning pie, incidentally, was baked by Mrs Hodder.

Judging of the floral bays was no easy task for Mrs Margaret Cederman and her assistant. Mrs Shirley Frater.

All these characters stepped from the pages of the "Book of Memories" produced by the Richmond institute.
