Nelson Holds Trophy

South Canterbury's chances of lifting the Peter Dawson Cup from Nelson seemed quite bright during the opening stages of this representative game at Ngawhatu. But Nelson, slow to settle down, recovered and poured on the pressure to such good effect that thereafter the young challenging side was kept mainly on defence. Nelson won 5-2. The game was played on a surprisingly good surface after torrential overnight rain, but the slippery surface did unsettle players from both sides. The Nelson attack was far too strong for South Canterbury, and the forward combination always looked dangerous when in possession.
