Services Recognised

Long service medals were presented to three Nelson men at a formal ceremony at the Nelson Army area headquarters recently. Principal recipient was W/O1 J. R.(Jim) Upton, who retired from the Army in June. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, for long and loyal service as a regular soldier. He was already the holder of the British Empire Medal (1959) and the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (1962). Our pic above shows W/O Upton receiving the congratulations of Brigadier E„J. Aitken, Commander of Southern Military District, after he had received the award. Also in the picture are Captain C. M. Simister and Major I. P. Marshall, Nelson area commander. The two other recipients were both masters at Nelson College. They received Cadet Force Medals. They were Major R. S. Boyd (left) and Captain D. A. Nightingale (below left). On parade was the staff of the Nelson area (below): W/O1 A. J. Hilton, W/O2 W. P. Gerard, Staff Sgt L. M. Shailes, Sgt M. Rangi, Sgt A. F. Guy, L/Cpl J. J. Haruru and L/Cpt G. J. Allison.
