Nelson College Loses To Hutt

A penalty goal kicked from a very handy position late in the second half gave Hutt Valley High School a meritorious 14-11 win over Nelson College earlier this month. But this was a game that Nelson College should not have lost. With a strong wind behind it in the first half, Nelson established an 11-0 lead and kept the pressure on Hutt with some well-directed, attacking kicks. But, through the excellent jumping of J. Lynds in the lineouts (left), Hutt began to gain the ascendency. The Hutt backs capitalised on the great amount of possession won, spun the ball effectively and after scoring a good try finished the half only 6 points in arrears. Nelson continued its. kicking tactics in the second half, giving away what little possession won, but Hutt handled the ball on almost every occasion it received it and only desperate Nelson defence prevented the scoring of several Hutt tries. The main architects of Hutt's victory were Lynd (left) and first five-eighths P. Ballinger (below left), hotly pursued by Peter Hildyard. As well as scoring two tries, he sent his line away with speed and backed up throughout. Nelson players at left are Guy Russell, Denis Callesen and Jason Clouston.
