Buildings Going Up and Down

The building industry appears to be recovering from the very lean year or two it has had, judging by the number of new buildings being constructed in and around Nelson. And, it would appear from the big increase in the number of building permits issued in February, that things are definitely looking up for this industry.

In Tahaki Street, a 18, 000sq ft warehouse is being erected for Burns Philp, by C. Gibbons and Co. The building will be of a single storey with a mezzanine floor. The concrete block building, costing about $100, 000, should be ready by October.

On the way down is the old bus station and offices of the New Zealand Railway Road Services in Hardy Street. The fate of the site is not yet known, but it seems likely that it will be sold.

A new home for the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows is taking shape in Vanguard Street. The concrete block structure of 2600sq ft includes 2200 sq ft of actual hall space. The builder is C. M. DuPau.

The premises occupied by Lucas's in Halifax Street have been extended by 2500 sq ft to give additional storage space.

The building was damaged in last year's earthquake and the front section has been demolished, and new offices erected on the second floor. Both jobs have been carried out by C. Gibbons Ltd.

Two new buildings, an apple sizing department and a winery and cool store, are well advanced at the Apple and Pear Board cannery at Stoke. Together they cover 22, 000 sq ft and are being built at a cost of $150, 000 by B. R. Malcolm Ltd.
