Buchanan Cup

The Nelson-Marlborough Centre failed to win the Buchanan Cup, for inter-centre swimming, by 12 yards. This was the distance that separated the local team from the cup-holder, Wellington, at the finish of the last event, the 5331/3 yards flying squadron medley. The fate of the cup was in doubt until this last race. Nelson-Marlborough was only five points behind Wellington when the last race began, and a win in this event would have ensured the breaking of the stranglehold which Wellington has had on the trophy for the last five years. Wairarapa, the other competing centre, was third.
