The Gisborne Competitions Festival
Talented performers from throughout the district, along with others from outside, competed in the Gisborne Competitions Society's forty-fourth annual festival which ran for a week in the Opera House during the August school holidays.
Good audiences followed the festival, which had entries exceeding 2000 in number. A feature of the competitions was the Grand Aria award of £100, for vocal soloists, which was being held for the first time. The winner was Miss Joan Kennaway, of Auckland, with Mrs Leone Small, of Gisborne, second, and Mr Eric Warr, of Palmerston North, third.
