Recent visitor to Darton Field was Captain Freddie Ladd of Tourist Air Travel, Auckland, who flew in on a chartered trip in his Grumman Widgeon seaplane. Unfortunately, heavy seas prevented Captain Ladd from landing in the Gisborne harbour, so he landed at the airport where he soon attracted much attention from the airport staff, as this was only the third time an aircraft of this type has landed there.
