Revolutionary Road Building

In conjunction with the Ministry of Works, the Gisborne City Council recently rebuilt and sealed over half a mile of city road in Centennial Marine Drive, in under five days. This outstanding achievement was made possible by the use of the Ministry of Works' revolutionary soil-cement machine, which has been proving its worth in the district for several months.

Another advantage of this method of road reconstruction is that the section of road being built is closed to traffic for only one day. At 8 a.m., traffic passes over a rough metalled surface, and at 5 p.m., a smooth bitumen sealed highway.

The soil-cement machine, pulled by a water tanker, commencing its run over the cement-covered road.

The machine, which is similar in principle to a huge rotary hoe, leaves in its wake a mixture of cement, soil, and water, which within 8 hours, will be set hard in a permanent road foundation.
