Te Waiteata Opened

An important step in the long road of Maori integration was taken this month with the official opening of the Te Waiteata Maori Youth Hostel in Russell Street.

The hostel will provide accommodation for up to 36 Maori youths from outlying districts who wish to take up apprenticeships to trades in the city.

The Salvation Army has taken the initiative in this project, assisted by grants from the Williams trusts and from the Government. Cost so far is in the region of £20,000, major items being the purchase of the Pineview reception centre and erection of a manager's dwelling.

The opening ceremony was performed by the Minister of Maori Affairs, Mr J. R. Hanan.
