Pictures From The Past

Mrs Fairlie, Bushmere Road, has provided the Pictures from the Past for this issue. She is a duaghter of Mr C. McCracken, the well-known contractor of days gone past on the East Coast, to whom many a bridge and road are monuments to this day.

Mr McCracken is the fine figure of a man standing with the saddled horse in this picture taken with one of his gangs of men, horses, ploughs and scoops during the formation of the road over the hill from Waipiro Bay to Ruatoria. The drivers are Joe Robinson, George Wall and Jack Grace. No bulldozers or carryalls in those days, but the job got done just the same.

Bricks being made on Sam Goldsmith's property at Te Puia Springs for the Waiapu Hospital and local homes. This would be 50 to 55 years ago. Cords of firewood are stacked at the far end for firing the kiln. At right is the "mixing bowl", which was operated by a horse walking round and round hitched to one end of the long pole. Many of these bricks are still standing in Te Puia Springs.
