Work has been started on the job of improving the road to the Cook Memorial at Kaiti. It is to be sealed and flanked with side-channels and an avenue of trees. This is one of New Zealand's classical historical views, already seriously affected by power poles and a building (behind which is Cook's first landfall, Young Nick's Head), and it is to be hoped that the beautification scheme includes consideration for the colour cameras of the thousands of tourists who make this spot their first and most important call in Gisborne.
