Aorangi and Hi-kurangi, monarchs of the East Coast, reputed to be the first points in the world on which the newly-risen sun shines each day, are seen in the distance in this photograph. Last weekend a party of Gisborne Canoe and Tramping Club members embarked on the first stage in the construction of a hut on the slopes of Hikurangi.
The hut is Intended to serve all trampers wishing to ascend the mountain.

John Wells, son of Mr and Mrs D. A. Welis, of Wainui Beach, who was presented recently with the highest scout honour, the Queen's Badge.
John is a member of the Tainui Sea Scouts.
