Ernie Clode of the Royal Hotel saved his valuable carpet by the timely installation of sandbags at the front door.

The Mangaotuku stream came up through the floors of the Devon street shops and then flowed away down Brougham Street.

The Ship Ahoy Coffee Saloon in Newton King's basement was flooded to a depth of five feet with furniture and stock floating on top. "Ship Ahoy"? The saloon will now be called the "Land Ho" Coffee Saloon.
