Wairoa's Big Day

Gisborne is just starting to talk about building a library worthy of the city, but down in Wairoa, their new, up-to-date Centennial Memorial Library is already a reality.

The picture shows the scene at the official opening of the new building last month, with the Mayor, Mr R. E. Shortt, addressing the large crowd assembled for the occasion....many of whom had contributed, directly or indirectly, to the cost of the project.

A "Boy Scout" handshake for Mrs Shortt as she acknowledges gift of first book to be issued by the library, presented to her as a memento of the occasion by the Minister.
The new Centennial Library, erected at a cost of £t3,500, was built to mark the 100th anniversary of the Hawkes Bay province. It was described at the opening cere mony as one of the finest to be built in New Zealand in the past 20 years.

In the evening, at a Mayoral reception, guests were entertained by a Maori party.
