"Miss Industries Fair"

Great interest was taken in the outcome of the "Miss Industries Fair" contest held in conjunction with the recent Industries Fair. Twenty-one contestants were interviewed at the first appearance, before the judges, who reduced the final contestants to 10 in number. These were Mrs Holly Mendham and Misses Barbara Hardy, Pennie Hill, Shirley Johnson, Gaynor Saunders, Patricia Lee, Geraldine Hankey, Judy Moriarty, Carolyn Lyle and Janet Moss.

On the Saturday night, a crowd of thousands gathered for the announcement of the winner, Carolyn Lyle, a 16-year-old city hairdresser, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Lyle, Rawiri Street.

The winner. A significant factor in Carolyn's favour...her intention to use the prize money to further her profession overseas, "and bring the results back to Gisborne".
