White-water Canoeing

The thrills of "white-water" canoeing were sampled on the Ruakituri River during a joint outing made recently by members of the Gisborne Canoeing and Tramping Club and the Wairoa Canoe Club. The occasion followed the annual dinner of the Gisborne Club held at Low's Rooms, when guests included the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs H. H. Barker, and Mrs Barker presented the trophies won during the year. Reference was made at the dinner to the outstanding list of successes achieved by members at the national championships at Palmerston North.

In a selected rapid about two miles above the projected oil drilling site, the canoeists tried their skill and in most cases came through without mishap. Some of the excitement of the moment is captured by these pictures taken by a club member.
