Parking Meters Installed

Parking meters (sometimes known as one-legged bandits) came to Gisborne this month. Some people were happy about it, and some weren't, but after a week or so they were accepted as part of the local scene, and down at the Council Chambers there were no doubt some satisfied smiles as the piles of three-penny bits were toted off to the bank.

Hey ! Meet our Mr Parkin-Meter, Voracious sprat and tray-bit eater, Who's lately taken up abode, Along the kerbs in Gladstone Road.
He's also known as Red-Eyed Dick, The bandit with the built-in tick; He marks the minutes while you shop, And if you're late, he calls a cop!

A Saturday morning start with the installation job at the east end of Gladstone Road.

In an incredibly short time, the meter standards had reached Grey Street, and in only a day more, it was a case of "Pay to Park".
