Changes Around Town

Most notable change in the Gisborne scene of recent times has been the sudden disappearance of the old buildings on "Wildish's Corner", at the intersection of Gladstone Road and Grey Street. Known in older times as "Reynold's Corner", the buildings have stood there for many a long year, will make way for a new five-storey block with shops on the ground floor and extending at single storey level down Grey Street. The new building, to cost £200,000, will be erected for the T. & G. Mutual Life Assurance Society by the Gisborne firm of Story & Lomas.

Meanwhile good progress is being made at the corner of Peel Street and Palmerston Road with the construction, by Crosby Construction Co., of the new premises of Common Shelton Ltd.

Out Wainui way there are some notable changes. The settlement is getting kerbing and channelling throughout, and improvements to the highway.

The highway this side of Wainui will be improved by the removal of the sharp corner opposite the 2XG radio mast. A big slice has been taken off the hill to ease the radius of the curve.
