Novelty for British Bowlers

The touring British bowlers, who have now played in almost every New Zealand centre, will probably remember the visit to Gisborne best of all. Why? Because it was so wet that outdoor bowls were out of the question, and instead they were initiated into the mysteries of that enormously popular winter variation, indoor bowls, which are practically unknown in the British Isles.

They approached the indoor sport with something of the same caution that a hunter on safari approaches a deadly python, but as the afternoon wore on, and they got the feel of the indoor "greens", they loosened up, and even began to enjoy the game with "the wee bowls on the green mat".

Whether the British bowlers were really converted to indoor bowls or not, Captain Proctor, in a witty speech of thanks for hospitality extended at Gisborne, declared that all the members of his team had thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

He then proceeded to make presentations to a number of local bowlers whose work had contributed to the success of the visit.
